Abstract:
In this chapter, an outline of the applications of statistical modelling tools to plastic injection molding process evaluation has been made. The chapter introduces the concept of statistical evaluation and its role in enhancing an understanding of the relationship between various process parameters and the product defects. The chapter highlights some of the major design of experiment methods employed in injection molding process evaluation such as response surface designs, Taguchi arrays and factorial designs. The chapter also presents a case study on statistical modelling of a packaging bottle cap specimen and discusses the mains effects and interaction effects of process parameters to major defects such as short shots, sink mark, warpage and shrinkage. The effects of variation of process parameters to a molding defect index have also been outlined. Utilization of statistical tools to injection molding process evaluation has brought about systematic approaches to understanding and optimizing various parameters and variables affecting product quality.
