Abstract:
In this chapter, the state-of-the art of artificial intelligence (AI) in injection molding is presented. This is done through an assessment of recent studies on the applications of AI in controlling, optimization, and prediction of injection molding, assessment of injection molding equipment, and in the evaluation of products manufactured through injection molding. Furthermore, the future prospective in plastic injection molding process modelling is presented. This is outlined in terms of the contributions and the future of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) modelling, statistical modelling and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based predictive modelling to plastic injection molding process. The various challenges hindering the successful adoption of CAE modelling and statistical modelling tools to plastic injection molding have been presented and prospects to address the challenges have been outlined. A discussion of how potential future advancements in these modelling techniques are poised to usher in an era of increased precision and efficiency in plastic injection molding process have been presented. The chapter also forecasts a potential future integration of CAE, statistical and AI modelling to plastic injection molding process design, optimization, and control.
